They should teach them how to learn and how to deal with people and how to be successful in this new world.” Duncan also promoted the idea of so-called competency-based education, in which students are given more responsibility for determining how they learn, and less responsibility for grades and standardized tests. “I think we should be doing competency-based education,” Duncan said. “Kids are going to be successful and achieve great things. We shouldn’t be handing out a bunch of grades and saying, ‘We’re going to be successful in life based on this grade.'” If Duncan were a modern-day education reformer, he’d be a fan of Google’s controversial project called G Suite for Education. Google offers a free online education service called G Suite that includes email, word processing, spreadsheet software, presentations, and other programs. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the company offers G Suite for Work, a business-focused version of the software. Although G Suite for Education is available to public school districts, universities, and businesses, it’s being particularly touted as a way to teach kids, especially those from underserved communities. By the end of last year, about 500 schools had used G Suite for Education and more than 5,000 teachers were using it in their classrooms. (It’s not clear how many kids are using it.)
